"What is called Traveling Horse comes from the pre-heaven Three-Harmony numbers. In the pre-heaven sequence, Yin is seven, Wu is nine and Xu is five; together they make twenty-one, so counting forward from Zi to Shen there are twenty-one positions, which is the Traveling Horse of the fire bureau. Hai, Mao and Wei have the numbers four, six and eight, which add up to eighteen, so counting from Zi to Si there are eighteen positions, which is the Traveling Horse of the wood bureau. Shen, Zi and Chen have the numbers ten, two and six, which total twenty-four, so counting from Zi to Hai there are twenty-four positions, which is the Traveling Horse of the water bureau. Si, You and Chou have the numbers nine, one and five, which together make fifteen, so counting from Zi to Yin there are fifteen positions, which is the Traveling Horse of the metal bureau."
"For Shen, Zi and Chen, the Horse resides in Yin; for Si, You and Chou, the Horse is in Hai; for Yin, Wu and Xu, the Horse resides in Shen; for Hai, Mao and Wei, the Horse is in Si. Traveling Horse means movement. When it meets Officer and Salary and auspicious spirits, there is joy of rapid promotion; when it meets inauspicious Sha, there is toil in running about. When it is clashed, this is called 'adding a whip', and movement becomes even swifter; when it is bound by combination, this is called 'tethered feet', wanting to move but unable to. Every auspicious or inauspicious auxiliary star has its good or bad strengthened by Traveling Horse."
