Literary star shines; success in examinations
"The so-called Academy (Xuetang) is like a person studying within an academy. The Literary Pavilion (Ciguange) is like today’s Hanlin Academy officials, hence the name 'Literary Pavilion', taking the meaning of learning that is highly refined and writings that stand out from the rest. Changsheng (Long-Life) is the proper position of the Academy; for example, when a metal-nature chart meets Xin-Si, metal’s Changsheng is in Si, and the Na-Yin of Xin-Si also belongs to metal—this is the case. For both Academy and Literary Pavilion, they must by all means avoid Void-and-Death and clashes or breaks; the stems and branches of the Na-Yin must not mutually overcome one another, then they can be properly used. As the Book of Victorious Blessings says: for Jia-Chen and Bing-Yin, the Academy is not genuine; at best one is wealthy under family shade, with low official rank and poverty. One may read and cultivate learning, yet end up with an empty and hollow reputation."
The Academy Star is the Changsheng position in Na-Yin. When it appears in the chart, it indicates intelligence and learning, with the potential to earn examination success and official titles, outstanding literary talent, and distinguished reputation. The Academy Star is also called the "Official-and-Noble Academy"; charts that carry this star usually belong to people who are well read, have excellent memory, and whose behavior and bearing naturally give others a sense of noble refinement. Many highly educated people, and even high-ranking officials and dignitaries, have the Academy Noble Star present in their BaZi.
According to San Ming Tong Hui, the Academy Star is most afraid of falling into Void-and-Death or being clashed and broken; the Na-Yin of stems and branches should not mutually overcome each other if it is to function well. If a BaZi chart contains both Wenchang and Academy, it can be called a configuration full of noble elegance; as long as one of them is present, the native is already very talented in study and is also able to turn misfortune into blessing throughout life. When Academy and Wenchang combine harmoniously, it greatly benefits academic achievement, examinations and advancement in scholarly or cultural careers.
