> Solitary destiny; many twists and turns in love
"To be old and without a husband is called gua (widowed); to be young and without a father is called gu (orphaned). Wang says: for a man whose fate is born in the place where wives are cut off and who encounters Gu Chen, it is hard throughout life to obtain a marriage partner; for a woman whose fate is born in the position where husbands are cut off and who meets Gua Su, she may marry repeatedly yet cannot grow old together. Whenever a person’s fate is afflicted by Gu and Gua, it signifies a solitary and emaciated form, a face lacking harmony, and disadvantage with the six kin."
The ancients defined Gua Su with the phrase: "To be old and without a husband is called gua," referring to the lonely state of advanced age without a spouse, and by extension indicating emotional loneliness and thin affinity with partners.
