Lonely and isolated; weak bonds with relatives
"To be old and without a husband is called gua; to be young and without a father is called gu. For the three positions of the Hai–Zi–Chou trine, moving one branch forward to see Yin is Gu, and moving one branch backward to see Xu is Gua. Passing the angle is Gu; retreating from the angle is Gua. It indicates a body that is thin and bony, a face lacking harmony, and disadvantage with the six kin. If located in the stages of birth and prosperity it is somewhat acceptable; in the stages of death and extinction it is especially severe. With Traveling Horse one wanders dissipated in foreign lands; with Emptiness one is unsupported in youth. Throughout life one often encounters repeated mourning and stacked misfortunes, kin and relatives are scattered and desolate, lonely and poor, and it is unfavorable."
The ancients defined Gu Chen with the phrase: "To be young and without a father is called gu," referring to the lonely and destitute state of losing one’s father at a young age.
If Gu Chen is located in the stages of birth and prosperity its influence is somewhat moderate; in the stages of death and extinction its inauspicious effects are especially severe, and its adverse impact is greatly intensified.
