Gou Jiao Sha is an important inauspicious Sha in Four Pillars fate study, mainly indicating lawsuits and imprisonment, endless disputes. "Gou" carries the meaning of entanglement and implication, while "Jiao" has the meaning of being bound and constrained. Those whose charts contain Gou Jiao Sha are easily drawn into right-and-wrong disputes, fall into restraints and entanglements, and are prone to misfortunes of lawsuits and imprisonment. The power of this Sha is strong and comparable to Wang Jie (Death and Robbery), chiefly bringing involvement in disputes, frequent obstruction in undertakings, and tense interpersonal relationships. Yet Gou Jiao Sha also has both auspicious and inauspicious sides: if the self (Day Master) can overcome the Sha, one is often shrewd and resourceful in mind, and can hold posts in criminal justice or as a general in charge of punishment; if the Sha instead overcomes the self, it indicates an unnatural end.
"‘Gou’ denotes the meaning of entanglement; ‘Jiao’ is the name for being bound. These two Sha often oppose and clash with one another, much like Death and Robbery. For Yang males and Yin females, the three branches before the Life Palace are Gou and the three branches after the Life Palace are Jiao; for Yin males and Yang females, the three branches before the Life Palace are Jiao and the three branches after the Life Palace are Gou. In general, whenever a fate encounters this Sha, if the self can overcome the Sha, the person tends to be clever and calculating in mind, charged with posts of criminal law or serving as a general whose duty is execution and punishment. If the Sha overcomes the self, it indicates an unnatural death."
The ancients understood the meanings of the two Sha, Gou and Jiao, as: “Gou” carries the meaning of entanglement, and “Jiao” is the name for being bound. The saying “the two Sha often oppose and clash, much like Death and Robbery” shows that the combined force of the two Sha is as fierce as Wang Jie. The method of locating them is that for Yang males and Yin females, the three branches before the Life Palace are Gou and the three branches after the Life Palace are Jiao; for Yin males and Yang females, it is the reverse. Classical texts especially emphasize that “if the self can overcome the Sha, the person will be clever and calculating in mind and in charge of posts related to criminal law”, which shows that Gou Jiao Sha has both auspicious and inauspicious aspects, with the key lying in the relative strength between the self and the Sha.
In modern society, the influence of Gou Jiao Sha is mainly seen in legal disputes, lawsuits, and interpersonal conflicts. Those whose charts carry Gou Jiao Sha easily quarrel with others over small matters or become entangled in legal problems, and their undertakings are easily obstructed. However, if one can make good use of this Sha energy and combine it with the help of benefactors to resolve and transform it, one may engage in work related to judiciary, lawyers, police, or military–police, and thus be able to bring out one’s strengths. This Sha most fears sharing a pillar with Official or Seven Killings, which indicates ceaseless lawsuits; if there are noble stars to protect and support, misfortune can be transformed into blessing.
