Fei Ren is the clashing position of Yang Ren, that is, the Earthly Branch that clashes with the branch where Yang Ren is located. Although the classical wording is brief, its meaning is profound: Fei Ren is the reverse impact of the power of Yang Ren. Just as its name “Flying Blade” suggests, it comes swiftly and unexpectedly; the force of the clash is often even fiercer than that of Yang Ren itself, and it mainly manifests as sudden accidents and injuries.
Fei Ren primarily indicates sudden disasters and accidental injuries, with extremely strong destructive power. The method of locating it is based on the clashing relationship of Yang Ren: when Jia’s Yang Ren is in Mao, the clashing branch You is Fei Ren; when Yi’s Yang Ren is in Yin, the clashing branch Shen is Fei Ren; when Bing and Wu’s Yang Ren is in Wu, the clashing branch Zi is Fei Ren, and so on. Although Fei Ren is fierce, if it encounters noble stars that resolve and transform it, it can instead turn into martial authority and power, reflecting the dialectical idea in fate studies that “within misfortune there can be blessing.”
